Young Scholar of the Yushan Program by the Ministry of Education -Assistant Professor Ting-Wan Chen

Assistant Professor Ting-Wan Chen is an outstanding alumna of our school. After obtaining her Ph.D. in Astrophysics from Queen's University Belfast in the United Kingdom, she gained experience at renowned institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany (Humboldt Fellowship) and Stockholm University in Sweden (EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship). In 2023, she returned to the Institute of Astronomy, where she also received the honor of being named a Young Scholar of the Yushan Program by the Ministry of Education.

Assistant Professor Chen is dedicated to the "Open Data" movement, providing real-time reports on transient observations. Her research focuses on time-domain astronomy, extremely bright supernovae, and kilonovae. Since 2019, she has co-led the European Southern Observatory advanced Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects (ePESSTO+). Leading a team of 323 scientists and students, she uses the Four-Meter-class New Technology Telescope to classify and observe newly discovered transient objects, successfully classifying 1729 supernovae.

She is actively involved in the Electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational wave sources at the Very Large Telescope (ENGRAVE) project, collaborating with 285 scientists to observe kilonovae using the Eight-Meter Very Large Telescope. By combining resources from Lulin Observatory, Central University, peer collaboration, and highly enthusiastic student researchers, she aims to lead the development of time-domain astronomy and contribute to Taiwan's academic output in the field of astronomy.
